Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Across Melbourne, homes will be lit with diyas, families will gather around tables crowded with food, and somebody's aunty will insist you have one more sweet. If you want that feeling without spending three days in the kitchen, this is the guide for you.
What is Diwali?
Diwali — also called Deepavali — is the festival of lights, one of the biggest celebrations in India and across the Indian diaspora. It marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, and it is celebrated with lamps, family, new clothes, prayers and, above all, food. Every family has its own Diwali table. What they all share is abundance: many dishes, shared, with everyone at the table at once.
Diwali dinner at Masti, Fitzroy
Masti sits at 354–356 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, five minutes from the CBD on Tram 11. On Diwali night the live clay tandoor will be running from 5pm, and Chef Manpreet Sekhon — the Curry Queen — will be cooking the kind of food she grew up celebrating with in Punjab.
There are three easy ways to celebrate with us:
1. Book a table for a Diwali feast
Our group set menus are made for exactly this kind of night — everything to the table, shared the way an Indian festival meal should be.
Vegetarian set menu — $59 per person
Non-vegetarian set menu — $69 per person
Minimum four guests
Prefer to order your own way? The full Masti menu is on too — street chaat, momos, kebabs from the tandoor, butter chicken, rich curries and Melbourne's only freshly baked gluten-free vegan naan.
2. Bring your own bottle — Diwali falls on BYO Sunday
Sunday is BYO night at Masti, and this year Diwali lands right on it. Bring the bottle you have been saving, raise a glass to the new year with your family, and let us take care of the food.
3. Take over the whole restaurant
Planning a bigger Diwali party — family, friends, community group or work team? Book Masti exclusively for $2,999 for up to 60 guests, including food, unlimited soft drinks, a house DJ and table setup.
