Vegan Curry Night in Melbourne: Tuesday at Masti, $30 a head

Indian food has always been one of the easiest cuisines in the world to eat vegan. Lentils, chickpeas, potatoes, cauliflower, okra and a cupboard full of spices — a huge share of the dishes cooked in Indian homes every day never needed meat or dairy in the first place. At Masti, we give that its own night.

What is Vegan Curry Night?

Every Tuesday at Masti, 354–356 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, Vegan Curry Night is $30 per person for rotating plant-based curries served with our house-made vegan naan. The curries change, so regulars always find something new, and the whole table can eat the same feast whether they are vegan, vegetarian or simply curious.

The naan nobody else in Melbourne makes

Most vegans and coeliacs have learned to skip the bread basket at Indian restaurants. Not here. Masti bakes Melbourne's only freshly baked gluten-free vegan naan in our live clay tandoor — plain, or with garlic, chive, sesame, onion seed or chilli. It is soft, blistered and properly naan, not a compromise.

Vegan dishes on the Masti menu every night

Vegan Curry Night is Tuesday, but plant-based eating at Masti isn't limited to one night. Dishes marked vegan (or with a vegan option) on our menu include:

Street food: pani puri with three spiced waters, onion bhaji, and vegan versions of samosa, aloo tikki chaat, papdi chaat and samosa chaat.

From the wok: Gobi Manchurian, chopsuey, and vegan versions of veg momos, Hakka noodles and Indo-Chinese fried rice.

Curries: dal tadka, aloo gobhi and bhindi do pyaza.

Breads: gluten-free vegan naan and vegan tandoori roti.

Why it works for mixed tables

Vegan Curry Night is not just for vegans. Indian curries were made for sharing, and a table of plant-based dishes is just as rich and satisfying as any other. It is a good night to bring the friend who says they "could never go vegan".

If you are gluten-free as well as vegan, tell us when you book. Our team will point you to the dishes that suit. For more detail, read our guide to vegan and gluten-free Indian food in Melbourne.
