BYO in Fitzroy this summer: bring a bottle to Masti on Wednesdays and Sundays

The holidays are when the good bottles come out — the wine someone gave you for Christmas, the one you brought back from the Yarra Valley, the bubbles saved for a catch-up with old friends. The best place to open them? A BYO restaurant where the food is worth the wine.

At Masti on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, every Wednesday and Sunday night is BYO. Bring your own bottle, we look after the glasses and the food. Corkage applies.

Why Indian food and BYO go so well together

Indian food is a gift for wine lovers. A few pairings our guests swear by:

Off-dry riesling or gewürztraminer with spicier dishes like Chettinad chicken or Goan prawn balchao — a touch of sweetness cools the heat.

Pinot noir or grenache with tandoor dishes — chicken tikka, lamb seekh kebab and Amritsari fish love a lighter red.

Shiraz with richer curries such as lamb rogan josh, goat curry or our 24-hour dal makhani.

Sparkling or rosé with street food — pani puri, chaat and momos.

Chardonnay with creamy dishes like Masti Butter Chicken or paneer butter masala.

BYO for groups over the holidays

Summer catch-ups tend to be bigger: school friends back in town, family visiting, the "we must do dinner before the year ends" group chat that finally picks a date. Our shared set menus are made for this — Veg $59 per person and Non-Veg $69 per person, for groups of four or more — with entrées, curries, naan, rice, raita and gulab jamun. Pair that with BYO on a Wednesday or Sunday and you have a long, generous dinner without a long, generous bar bill.
